![]() We have tried to build a platform for dialogue and comparison between different Italian diasporas all over the world, connected to the regional spaces where traces of past migrations are still present today. ![]() The material culture of the past and present can only be experienced by visiting the specific spaces of the diaspora, from landscapes to environments, from food to music to dance. "The aim of the program is to build a broad transnational perspective on the Italian diaspora, with particular attention to the South and to Calabria. Participants also took a number of guided tours in the neighboring areas, including a day trip to Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019.Ībout 30 writers, journalists and artists interested in the history and cultures of the Italian diaspora participated. Maria Gillan brings her life in Paterson, New Jersey to Italyĭedicated to the theme of writing on memory and the cultural heritage relating to Italian origin, the seminar takes place for two weeks in beautiful locations in northern Calabria and Basilicata, alternating stays in the mountains, in the heart of the Pollino National Park, and at sea, on the Calabrian Ionian coast. The three workshops offered were led by the renowned Italian-American writer Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Margherita Ganeri and Connie Guzzo McParland. ![]() The program has a number of prestigious sponsors, including the Embassy of Canada in Rome, the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal (Canada), the chair of Italian American Studies to Loyola University in Chicago (USA), as well as from the Association for Italian-American Studies (IASA). The seminars were promoted by the Italian Diaspora Studies Association, in collaboration with the Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Calabria and with the United States Consulate in Naples. ![]() Maria Mazziotti Gillan has spent the last two weeks of May leading writing workshops and personal conferences with writers in Calabria, Italy. ![]()
